Why Your Own Photos Beat Stock Images on Social Media

Back when I started my business, I understood how important it was to be yourself online. But we were also in a time when you needed to show up "Instagram Perfect" on social media.

When I started out, I had a professional photo from my days working for a company because that was the only headshot I had. I used it for many years until I had enough money to do a professional shoot and show up online the way I actually wanted to represent my business.

We're lucky to live in an age where you can have a professional-level camera right in your pocket. But more and more, I'm seeing people not use it because they're using generic stock photos or, worse, AI images of themselves instead. In that way, it's almost harder for people now than it was when professional photo packages were the only option.

If I’m being totally honest, people can tell when a photo isn't yours on social media. It comes across as generic, and when it's generic, people keep scrolling.

Your own photos do something stock images never can. They build trust because people see the real product, the real space, and the real person behind the brand. They make you recognizable over time.

They perform better on social media because authentic, in-the-moment content is what people actually stop to look at. And they tell your story, which you cannot do with someone else's image.

Stock photos and AI-generated images might look clean, but they don't build trust and they don't tell anyone anything real about you.

What to Do If a Photographer Isn't in the Budget Yet

Having a photographer take a package of photos for you is an investment, I won't sugarcoat that. And it's not always accessible right away. That's okay! You can still show up with scroll-stopping content using photos you already have and can take on your own.

Here's how to make it work.

Use your phone.

Today's smartphones take better photos than many cameras did a decade ago. You don't need anything else to start.

Find good light.

Natural light is your best friend. Shoot near a window during the day. Avoid overhead fluorescent lighting if you can.

Keep your background simple.

A clean surface, a plain wall, or your actual workspace beats a fake background every time. You don't need a studio, just use your own space!

Shoot more than you think you need.

Take fifteen versions of the same shot and pick the best two. If you’re taking a video, shoot it multiple times. You’ll want the backups in case they don’t come out right.

Get candid.

A shot of your product coming out of the oven, your hands wrapping an order, a moment at your workbench feels more real because they are.

Use your phone's portrait mode sparingly.

It's great for products and some headshots, but it can look overdone. Experiment and see what feels like you.

Edit lightly.

Free apps like Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed are more than enough. Heavy filters age your content fast.

The goal is consistency instead of worrying all the time about perfection. A real, slightly imperfect photo of your actual business will outperform a flawless stock image every single time.

Once You Have the Budget, Get a Professional Photographer

When you have professional photos, posting becomes easier. Showing up on social media goes from something you push yourself to do to something that feels almost easy because you have content that actually represents you.
