Have you heard of Toastmasters? This is a recent speech that I did for my Toastmasters Club. It was well received and I thought maybe you could learn a thing or 2 from it.
Do you ever wonder if your current thought is either a Tweet or a Facebook update? This is an every day problem in my life! Just 3 years ago when I started a new job as Project Manager for WHERE magazine and the Greater Halifax Visitor Guide I didn’t think this would EVER be an issue as I had made a decision that I didn’t need to be on Twitter, that Facebook was enough for me! I wasn’t going to jump on this bandwagon, as this was just a passing phase. That quickly changed when on my first day I was told that updating and maintaining the ever so popular WHERE Halifax Twitter feed was part of my responsibilities. That week I got a quick 5-minute “ Tutorial” on Twitter and I have been hooked since! If you had told me on that first day that in a little over 2 years I would open my own social media company I would have told said “ You are CRAZY!”
When I tell people that I’m a Social Media Consultant many people smile and nod, while others say “ Wow that’s such a cool job!”. The reason that many nod is simply because they are not quite sure what a Social Media Consultant is or does on a regular basis. I’m not even sure my own parents are 100% sure what a regular day looks like for me.
Definition: Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking and social curation, are among the different types of social media.
Currently in Canada and Nova Scotia the most popular Social Media platforms are: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram. For teenagers the most popular are: Instagram and Snapchat.
“LinkedIn is for the people you know. Facebook is for the people you used to know. Twitter is for people you want to know” ~Unknown
Facebook: There’s a few different ways that a person can use Facebook. There is your personal page, a Business Page or a Group Page.
Personal Page: Is exactly that. This is where you are chatting with your family, friends, co-workers, past collegues. This is where you are posting cat videos, pictures of your kids/grandkids ect. You can only have 1 personal page but you can run as many business pages as you wish.
Business Page: Is a page where you represent your business or your organization. This is where you give tips and information about your business and the industry. You can only invite your friends to your business page and only people that have “ Liked” your page can see your updates.
Facebook Group: Can be a private or public group that wants to discuss or be informed on a specific topic. We could have a Successfully Speaking Toastmasters private group if we wish where the agenda and details could be posted.
Twitter: is my favourite feed! You have 140 characters to get your message out, you can connect with anyone and hopefully they will follow you back. Experts compare Twitter to a bar scene as they say you are a little bit riskier, you may jump into conversations that you wouldn’t otherwise and say Hello to strangers.
LinkedIn: is considered your business meeting and your online resume. This is where you post business information, useful tips and make business connections. Don’t do say anything or post pictures that you wouldn’t feel comfortable doing in a business meeting. Rule of thumb: Don’t say anything you wouldn’t want plastered on a billboard next to your face.
Now that we have discussed a bit of what is Social Media…Do you think Social Media is a Fad? Or the biggest shift since the Industrial revolution? Being involved and working with Social Media platforms on a daily basis I have been both shocked and impressed when hearing specific facts about social media. Here are some of the ones I speak about on a regular basis:
- 50% of the world is under 30 years old and 96% of these people have joined a social network.
- Social Media has overtaken Porn as the #1 activity on the web
- 1 in 8 couples in the US have met online.
- Facebook added over 200 million users in less than a year
- If Facebook were a country it would be the 3rd’s largest in the world
- 80% of companies use social media for recruiting and of those companies 95% of those use LinkedIn
- Generation Y & Z think email is passé, universities have stopped given out email accounts and instead give Ipad, Tablets and e-readers.
And most shocking is that:
- While I’m currently speaking to you for 5-7 minutes approximately 100 hours have been uploaded to YouTube
I leave you tonight with two of my favourite social media quote and those are:
“ We don’t have a choice on whether we DO social media, the question is how well do we do it?” – Eric Qualman and “ Life was much easier when APPLE and BLACKBERRIES were just fruits.”
Until next time ( I promise it will be soon!)
